DUE to blustery torrential weather, households and businesses and farms in Limerick’s hinterland were affected by saturated land or outright flooding - some for two years running. Many of theses properties were hit in the bad flooding of 2009 and 2010 and will have no wish to undergo a similar ordeal of loss of business, expensive refurbishment and the temporary displacement of home/ licensed company address.
Consider the following recommendations issued by Brian McNelis of the Irish Brokers Association if you are someone whose property or income is challenged by flood damage. He suggests:
* Report your claim to your Insurance broker or company as soon as possible. If you have a broker, he will advise you on the steps needed to minimise your financial loss.
* Mark the water levels on the walls for reference and photograph or video all flood damage.
* Make every effort to keep evidence of damaged goods and/ or receipt everything that you replace and even catalogue the items damaged or lost.
* If necessary, you can arrange for emergency repairs to be carried out to stop any damage getting worse. However, you must keep receipts, as these will be needed for your insurance claim
* In aftermath, rent a humidifier to assist in drying out your property.
* Get advice where detailed, lengthy repairs are needed. Beware of bogus tradesmen and always check references and ensure that the tradesmen have insurance cover.
* Have an expert check the wiring before using the electricity again.
* If you need to move out of your home while it is being repaired then check with your broker. Most policies will cover the cost of alternative accommodation (up to a specified limit).
* Make sure your insurance broker or company knows where to contact you if you have to move out of your home.
